27 June 2011 Oprah Winfrey, speaking shortly after being awarded an honorary doctorate in education at the University of the Free State on Friday, applauded South Africans for their ability to forgive. Winfrey addressed the audience of over 4 000 that had gathered to watch the graduation ceremony and took a few questions from students. Making reference to the infamous Rietz residence videotape, which threatened to tear the university apart along racial lines, Winfrey praised the spirit of forgiveness demonstrated by the workers involved in the video. She called them up to the stage, where she individually shook their hands for the role they played in mending tensions in a racially charged environment. Winfrey said the demonstration of forgiveness is what drew her to the University of the Free State, and she wanted to come witness it for herself, saying it was “amazing” and “nothing short of a miracle.” The former talk show host, famous for dishing out restorative advice, said the decision to forgive was beneficial for the person doing the forgiving as much as it was for the person on the receiving end of the forgiveness. Winfrey also commended Vice-Chancellor Jonathan Jansen on being instrumental in the process of building racial harmony by facilitating a process in which the students who made the video could be forgiven. Although Jansen was slated by many for his reconciliatory stance in the incident, Winfrey noted his strength of resolve, saying he “stood in his own truth” – a move she feels laid crucial stepping stones on the path to integration. She urged the university to stay on track with its goal of building a united community. “Believe in the vision that the university holds for every one of you … Take what has happened and use it to … move the country forward. That is my dream for you.” Source: BuaNews
The BJP government in Tripura would soon consult educationists to explore the possibility of introducing the NCERT syllabus at school level in the State without the “modifications made during the previous Left rule”, a Minister said on Wednesday.State Education Minister Ratan Lal Nath said, “The NCERT course, with a lot of modifications, was introduced during the Left rule, as a result of which students from Tripura were facing tough situation in all-India competitive examinations. Despite good results they were not getting government jobs as expected. So, we have decided to consult acclaimed educationists to introduce the syllabus at school level without change.”The Minister alleged that due to modifications in the syllabi, names of many great Indians were deleted and the names of many others were included, which were not desirable.“I do not want controversy, so I would not mention whose names were deleted and whose names were included. I think if the syllabi is introduced in its original form, everything would be corrected,” Mr. Nath said.To a question, he said there is a provision for 10% modification in the NCERT course to introduce local (State) history and geography, and those would be included.Tripura has a literacy rate of 97%.
After Congress’ annoucement that they will stake claim to form government in Goa, Rashtriya Janata Dal leader Tejaswi Yadav on Thursday said that the party MLAs will meet Bihar Governor Satya Pal Malik at 1 p.m. on Friday, May 17 to stake claim to form the goverment in the State. The RJD will also hold a one-day dharna across the State in protest of Karnataka Governor Vajubhai Vala’s decision to invite BJP to form government in the State, Mr. Yadav said in a press conference.“I would like to ask BJP and JD(U) chief Nitish Kumar whether they had made a mistake in Bihar by not inviting single largest party to form the government,” Mr. Yadav added. “Why the double standard? Single largest party gets invited to form government in Karnataka but not in Bihar. Why did the BJP come in through back door to form government with JD(U) in Bihar?” he asked.Though the RJD-JD(U) ‘mahagathbandhan’ won the 2015 Assembly elections in Bihar, the alliance broke in 2017 with Nitish Kumar’s JD(U) aligning with the BJP to form the government. The RJD, with 80 seats was the single largest party in the State. JD(U) won 71 seats, while the BJP won 53.Mr. Yadav in press conference also appealed to all Opposition parties to “join hands together and reach Karnataka to protest”.Mr. Yadav raised the issue of BJP being given 15 days to prove the majority and asked how would party reach the magic figure. “The BJP will reach the magic figure in 15 days? What will they do? Why (was) RJD was given just twi days time to form the government but BJP was given 15 days time to prove majority?” Mr. Yadav asked. He added that Mr. Yeddyurappa should not have taken oath on moral grounds.“Karnataka is not in South but in the country. We should all reach there to protest murder of democracy,” he said, and added that today it was Karnataka, tomorrow “they will replicate in other states too.”“It’s all BJP’s greed to form the government. Democracy is in danger in the country today,” he said.(With inputs from Amarnath Tewary)
Dubai: India skipper Virat Kohli lost his numero uno status after being toppled by Australia’s Steve Smith in the batsman’s chart, while Jasprit Bumrah rose to third position among bowlers in the latest ICC Test Rankings released on Tuesday. Kohli slipped to No.2 spot following his first-ball duck in the Jamaica Test, while Smith returned to the top spot riding on his twin centuries in the first Ashes Test against England and 92 in the second match. Also Read – Puducherry on top after 8-wkt win over Chandigarh Among others, Ajinkya Rahane returned to top 10, rising four places to No.7, after following up his half-century and hundred in Antigua with another useful fifty in Jamaica. Hanuma Vihari, described by Kohli as “the find of the series”, shot up 40 places to No.30 after just six Tests following a fruitful West Indies tour. With India beating West Indies by 257 runs in the second Test here on Monday, Kohli registered his 28th Test win from 48 matches, surpassing Mahendra Singh Dhoni’s 27 wins from 60 Tests, to become the country’s most successful captain in the longest format. Also Read – Vijender’s next fight on Nov 22, opponent to be announced later However after having made 76 in the first innings of the second Test against the West Indies, Kohli made a first-ball duck in the second essay. He is yet to add to his 25 Test hundreds after three Tests this year. That allowed Smith, who missed the third Test at Headingley, to open up a single-point lead in the latest rankings. He has a chance to extend that lead in the fourth Ashes Test, starting at Manchester on Wednesday. Smith was on the top spot since December 2015. It was only in August 2018, when he was serving a ban for his role in the ball-tampering scandal, that Kohli overtook him after reaching career-high rating points in the series against England. The Australian No.4 has fought his way back up the charts in his first series back from the ban, making twin centuries in the first Test against England and 92 in the second. He now averages 63.2 in Test cricket. Kohli’s next chance to challenge Smith will be in the home Test series against South Africa, starting on October 2. In ICC Test rankings for bowlers, Bumrah, who is currently the No.1 ODI bowler, continued his impressive run to climb up to the third spot with a career-best 835 rating points. Bumrah is now only behind Australia’s Pat Cummins and South Africa’s Kagiso Rabada. West Indies skipper Jason Holder, who is already No.1 on the ICC Test rankings for all-rounders, rose seven places to join England’s James Anderson at the fourth spot. He picked up six wickets in the second Test, including 5/77 in the first innings. Among other movers in the bowling chart were India’s Mohammed Shami (up one to No.18) and Ishant Sharma (up one to No.20). Bumrah, who earlier in the series became the fastest Indian to pick up 50 Test wickets, has had an exceptional time in red-ball cricket since his debut in early 2018, racing to 62 wickets in just 12 matches. In the just-concluded two Tests against the West Indies, Bumrah finished with 13 wickets at a strike rate of 9.23. That included figures of 5/7 in the first Test and a hat-trick in the first innings of the second Test at Sabina Park, Jamaica. India won the series 2-0.
Alex Rodriguez, banned for a year over performance-enhancing drugs, completed his suspension with the end of the World Series, won by San Francisco in seven games over Kansas City, and is eligible to return to the Major Leagues.Rodriguez missed the entire 2014 season after being suspended following MLB’s investigation into the Biogenesis case. Rodriguez has not spoken with the media, and his public appearances have been limited to random football and baseball games.Rodriguez, 39, has no formal plans yet to speak with the media, his spokesman said Thursday morning. The New York Yankees and Rodriguez both appear as if they are trying to be conciliatory after the rancor of his suspension. Rodriguez has three years and $61 million remaining on his contract. As part of the deal negotiated after the 2007 season, Rodriguez can earn an additional $6 million by hitting just six more home runs and tying Willie Mays for fourth on the all-time list with 660.Manager Joe Girardi and general manager Brian Cashman have both said they are unsure what to expect from Rodriguez on the field. Rodriguez may have a chance to retain his starting third base spot, but that will rest largely on what the Yankees do this offseason and if Rodriguez is fit enough.Rodriguez has played in only 44 games over the past two years and has had surgery on both of his hips. Girardi has talked with Rodriguez about trying to play first base as a backup. Rodriguez would also DH if he is on the team.Despite the bad blood from the lengthy and heated appeals process, the Yankees have given no indications they will release Rodriguez. If they did so, they would owe him his entire salary. Yankees officials have said that if Rodriguez can still play, they will take him back for 2015.
K. Garnett2003-0489.033.219.06.816.2 The NBA Christmas Day games are one of the league’s most visible showcases. Rivalries are deepened, as with the Clippers-Warriors matchups in 2013 and 2014, or rejoined, as with the centerpiece of this year’s slate, a finals rematch between the Golden State Warriors and the Cleveland Cavaliers. For the last seven years, the Oklahoma City Thunder have enjoyed prime placement on the Christmas marquee, playing against some of the best teams in the league. But this season, after former MVP Kevin Durant left town over the summer, the Thunder’s star power has diminished enough to warrant a matchup against the Minnesota Timberwolves, currently 9-19 and one of the worst teams in the league. We can use FiveThirtyEight’s Elo ratings to see just how far the Wolves fall below the Thunder’s standards. Here are Oklahoma City’s Christmas Day opponents beginning in 2010: C. Paul2008-0987.832.47.915.715.9 12/25/2015ThunderBulls16501524 L. James2009-1091.440.09.811.516.5 You might notice that in 2013 the Thunder got stuck playing the New York Knicks, TV’s worst recurring Christmas Day special. Except 2013 was the rare occasion when the Knicks looked like a legitimate NBA team coming into the season. Their preseason Elo rating was 1579, 128 points higher than their rating on Christmas Day, or the difference between a top-10 team and a bottom-5 one. So the Thunder weren’t supposed to have a dog of a game, they just ended up with one because the Knicks fell off the wagon. That wasn’t the case for this season’s Timberwolves. Minnesota came into the season with a rating of 1434, and has since fallen to 1426. The idea with the Wolves was that they have one of the brightest talents in the league, Karl-Anthony Towns, and a roster packed with young, exciting players liable to throw a 30-foot alley-oop or dunk on your head. They were supposed to be among the baby-faced upstarts in the league this season, and they might yet be if they ever figure out how to hold onto a lead. This is a flavor of game the league likes to book. Last Christmas saw a similar matchup between the Miami Heat, two years removed from LeBron James’ leaving in free agency to return to Cleveland, and the New Orleans Pelicans, home to Anthony Davis. The matchmaking logic made sense enough: Pair off a franchise familiar to fans with a few stars left over from deep playoff runs against an up-and-coming face-of-the-league-type star.Things didn’t work out so well then, either. The Heat came into the game looking like dark-horse contenders in the east, with Dwyane Wade, Chris Bosh and Hassan Whiteside playing at high levels. But the Pelicans were beset by injuries early in the season, and Davis never took the leap forward many expected. New Orleans came into the game at 9-20, and while it took the game into overtime, it was hardly the glamour matchup the league had hoped for.Last year’s Pelicans-Heat and this year’s Wolves-Thunder aren’t quite parallel, though, because the year before — the Heat’s first without LeBron — saw Miami host James and his Cavs, beating them 101-91. Durant’s Warriors make a fine partner for the Cavs, but a Christmas Day reunion with Russell Westbrook would have been something to see.Westbrook is averaging 31.3 points, 10.5 rebounds and 10.8 assists with a 41.9 usage percentage and a 54.1 true shooting percentage. But as if the phrase “averaging a triple-double through Christmas Day” isn’t impressive enough, the triple-doubles he’s racking up are far removed from the basic 10-10-10 variety. If we adjust for pace of play (which has slowed from the breakneck days of Oscar and Magic), he’s having the finest triple-double-type season we’ve ever seen.Below is a versatility index1We’re using John Hollinger’s old formulation, which is the geometric mean of points, rebounds and assists, to capture players who have high averages in all three stats. (Simply adding the three stats up and taking an average would over-weight scoring, since point totals tend to be higher than assists and rebounds.) for the players with the highest point-rebound-assist per-possession averages in NBA history: 12/25/2012HeatThunder16991661 K. The No. 2 spot belongs to Rockets star and former Thunder sixth man James Harden, who is averaging a per-100-possessions triple-double of his own for new coach Mike D’Antoni, in a role I like to think of as “overgrown Steve Nash does his best Corey Maggette impersonation.” Giannis Antetokounmpo, who turned 22 this month, comes in 27th.)This won’t be the first time Westbrook will be playing Christmas Day without Durant. In 2014, Oklahoma City drew the defending-champion San Antonio Spurs (also without Kawhi Leonard) as its opponent, and won 114-106, with Westbrook pouring in 34 points, 11 assists, 5 rebounds, and 5 steals. It was a brilliant game, the type of which we’ve become accustomed to from Westbrook the last few seasons. The difference this season is that if he repeats that line on Sunday, or even if he racks up his 14th triple-double of the season, it will be away from the biggest stage of the day.Check out our latest NBA predictions. When Melanie Nichols steps onto the mound at Buckeye Field, she says she feels at home. But batters facing the 5-foot-10-inch freshman might not feel welcome, because Nichols has 128 strikeouts.Nichols currently holds a 21-2 record for the Ohio State softball team. The old record for a rookie was 16 wins, as Nichols surpassed former All-American OSU pitcher Kim Reeder and Netherland Olympian Kristi DeVries.“At first, I actually didn’t know what the record was until after I beat it,” Nichols said. “Maybe that helped. But I try not to focus on that because I can be a lot better than I am.”Nichols came to OSU battling an improper recovery from surgery on a torn meniscus in her left knee.“It was in the middle of my high school season, so the day I got cleared I went and played a doubleheader, which was not the smartest thing to do. Definitely not,” Nichols said. After a short while at OSU, her knee was “good to go,” she said. But when the Scarlet and Gray headed down to Florida for a tournament at the beginning of the season, Nichols faced another injury.“My back started to really hurt and all I thought was that I had a really bad pinched nerve,” Nichols said. “But my rib was out of my place.”Shortly after Nichols’ rib was popped back in, she blamed her clumsy demeanor for the reason she was wearing a boot on her ankle a few weeks back.“What’s really funny is that I never get hurt, but once I got knee surgery it’s been bam, bam, bam,” she said.Although Nichols said she expected to be a regular freshman and never expected to be doing the things she’s doing now, assistant coach Erica Beach thought otherwise.“A lot of people look past their freshman year and don’t expect great things, but I expected her to make an immediate impact like she has,” Beach said. And Nichols has done just that.Currently on a 10-game winning streak, the freshman pitcher has a 1.86 ERA with more than 160 innings pitched.Nichols had a win against the Michigan Wolverines, who were ranked No. 2 in the nation at the time.“On the mound, she’s mentally tough. She brings confidence to the pitching circle,” Beach said. “And off the field, she’s a really great chemistry player. People like to be around her.”That mental toughness and confidence have definitely worked for Nichols, who has thrown 15 complete games.“She focuses on being great in the game. She practices like she plays,” Beach said.Although Nichols has said she has much to improve on, it’s not only this year that she’s expected to make an impact. Coach Linda Kalafatis said she knows Nichols will be a contributor all four years.“We knew that Mel had the chance to be maybe one of the best pitchers here. She’s got the potential depending on how hard she wants to work for it,” Kalafatis said. “In the same respect, did I think we’d get to the point where she’s 21-2? No, I guess I never thought of it in those kind of numbers. But you know, winners get records but teams win games.”
Inter Coach Luciano Spalletti believes Spanish sides move the ball quicker and think faster than Italian teams after slumping to a 2-0 defeat in Camp Nou.Spalleti reserved words of praise for his Spanish counterparts for thinking outside the box after following their loss at Barcelona on Wednesday night.“I think there is a difference with the Spanish sides, as they move the ball quicker, they think faster, are more reactive when a situation changes; you have to look beyond what you can see,” Spalletti told Football Espana after the game.“If we can’t get past their initial pressure and take control of the gap left behind, clearly it becomes very difficult. We didn’t pass the ball properly, we were unable to elude their pressing and were always under pressure.“In the first half, the idea we gave was of being pathetic and put under pressure.Quiz: How much do you know about David Villa? Boro Tanchev – September 14, 2019 Time to test your knowledge about Spanish legendary forward David Villa.“That’s what disappoints me the most, as we fought so hard to get here and I expected us to have the same attitude in the biggest game, but instead we weren’t courageous in our passing when we got it back, we never kept it cleanly, and Barcelona interpreted it well.“I don’t like this attitude of feeling ‘poor things, they started to gain some courage as time wore on,’ because that is not something anyone wants to hear.“When we won back the ball, we never managed to keep it, that’s the main problem. You have to pass it around to create the spaces to play in. If we win back the ball, don’t understand what we’re trying to do, then clearly Barcelona have the advantage.“When they have the ball, they move it side to side, up and down, tiring you out. We should’ve won the ball back more often and kept it clean to put Barcelona under pressure.“You can’t come here to counter and leave them the initiative for 90 minutes, because you won’t make your mark that way.”
For the Albiceleste defender the return of the Argentinean superstar will sure be soon, after he has missed six matchesAfter Argentina was defeated by France in the FIFA World Cup Round of 16, superstar Lionel Messi said he wanted to take a break. And the superstar has missed the last six matches for his nation. But defender Gabriel Mercado has said that his country will welcome Messi back “with open arms” when he returns.“We have to respect his decision, he has his reasons for wanting to take time out and if he wants to consider a return at some point, that will be really important,” he was quoted by Sport 360.Match Preview: Barcelona vs Valencia Boro Tanchev – September 14, 2019 Is derby time in La Liga, as Barcelona welcomes Valencia to the Camp Nou Stadium tonight at 21:00 (CET).“All Argentineans are waiting for him with open arms, so we have to wait and see what will happen.”“It was really difficult for Argentina since the qualification with three different coaches,” Mercado said.“Jorge [Sampaoli] arrived and tried to implement his ideas and we couldn’t do it at the World Cup.”“It is not easy to play a World Cup because all the teams want what you want. Argentina had additional pressure because at the last World Cup they lost the final and would only be happy with winning the cup,” he added.“We tried, it was our dream, but unfortunately we couldn’t do it and Jorge had to leave us.”
